Identifying your dog
Accidents happen! Sometimes your toddler opens the door and thinks that their loving pet is due for an adventure, and the loving pet agrees. This leads to a caring citizen finding your pet and calling bylaw to bring the pet to safety. Whatever the case is, there are some things you should consider before your pet does leave on an "adventure", so that individuals are able to get your pet home as quick as possible.
DOES YOUR PET HAVE PROPER IDENTIFICATION?
One of the first things that you can do to keep your pet safe is to ensure proper identification.

Our favorite form of identification would be the MICROCHIP. Companies like EIDAP provide quality microchips that are as easily administered by a veterinary. At our local Taber Pet Clinic, you can have your pet micro chipped for $35. Sometimes with tags, your dog can lose them during their adventure, or aren't always wearing their collar. Micro chipping is an excellent alternative to this as the microchip is injected between the shoulders with a normal needle (similar to a vaccination). Shelters, vet clinics, and law enforcement are able to use a scanning device that will provide the microchip number, which is registered with your animals information, and your information. This way we can see contact information and sometimes even health information which is helpful in cases of dogs with health conditions that would be compromised if they were not given daily medications.

Another way that professionals can identify your animal is through Town registry. With the Town of Taber, you register your neutered/spayed animal for a one time fee of $50, or intact animal for a one time fee of $100. This comes with a tag that attaches to their collar. The tag contains a registry number, which the Town would have on file with your contact information.
From Town of Taber - Dog Licensing
Taber has a by-law in place for the licensing and control of dogs. All dogs over 6 months of age are required to be licensed. The owner of every dog shall obtain a license when they become the owner of the dog, or the dog has attained the age of six (6) months. Every license expires upon the death of the dog or when ownership of the dog transfers to another person. |
Spay & Neuter
To prevent accidental litters of puppies, we highly recommend discussing spaying or neutering with your veterinarian. They will be able to give you the best knowledge for the right time to spay or neuter. Spaying and neutering can also prevent future health issues.
Our local shelters constantly see an overwhelming amount of puppies that come through and are never claimed, due to unwanted or irresponsible breeding.

Training
Terrible 2's? Demanding behaviors? Barking at your guests as if they've never met them before?
No dog is perfect, and neither are the humans. It's okay to admit that maybe you have your work cut out for you and it's time to get schooled or reach out for resources! Especially when it comes to shelter dogs. We often see that the issue isn't the dog. The issue is the lack of socialization, time spent with, training, and mentoring that the dog received (or didn't) before coming to us at the shelter. This as well as the overwhelm of shelter life, and a new home, or past trauma, can result in behaviors that get triggered regularly. Sometimes it's a quick fix, and others, it's a work in progress. It's completely normal and recommended even without behavioral issues, to work with a professional Dog Trainer. Don't panic! A peaceful future is possible! |
There are many different online and in-person options, but these are some of the local professional dog trainers: Happy Puppy Training (Taber) Many Muddy Paws (Lethbridge) Paws on Training (Lethbridge) New Leash on Life Training Academy Inc (Lethbridge) Bogdan's Dog Training Center and Boarding Kennel (Lethbridge) Absolute Stirling Dog Training (Stirling) Chinook K9 (Calgary |
Grooming
All dogs, just as humans, deserve healthy hygiene. All dogs regardless of hair length or type, need regular grooming. Matting, unclipped nails, poor oral health, and dirty ears can create many health and behavioral issues including physical pain, mood instability/irritation, hot spots, slipping and hurting legs, joint problems, and chronic infections.
If you are unable to regularly send your dog to a groomer, there are many caring and knowledgeable groomers that will work with you to provide you the best information to keep up on your dogs grooming at home, as well as recommend the different products that work best for your dog.
Sending your dog to the groomer regularly is extremely beneficial as it keeps them clean, comfortable, and free from sores or infections, as well as groomers will be able to spot little things or changes in health that you may not have noticed. This helps in prevention or fast acting care to their health.
